Traditional Literacy Definition

Traditional Literacy
According to UIS (2006), Traditional literacy describes a “set of technical skills” (p. 159).  Individual technical skills stimulate internal cognition processes and application.  Individual literacy demonstrates reading and comprehension skills, critical thinking and cognitive analysis, and task application demonstrating knowledge (UIS, 2006).  
 
Reading Out Loud Stimulates the Brain
Reading out-loud or explaining what one has read, stimulates the brain's hippocampus short-term or long-term memory neurons creating internal visual images forming associations evolving into information.  Rubin, Watson, Duff, & Cohen, N. (2014) explains, “The hippocampus supports the ability to bind and flexibly represent discrete elements of an experience and, through its interconnections with other neural systems, permits the expression of flexible and adaptive behavior” (Conclusion, p. 742).
 
UIS (2006) suggest, “The transition from oral to literate modes has a fundamental impact on human consciousness” (p. 149).  Literacy impacts one’s internal or external decisions or perceptions. 
 
Literacy Internal Engagement
Literacy engages the individual subconscious and conscious mind interpreting or creating an idea, information analysis, and multiple or simultaneous thought processes.Individual literacy reflects upon the task application and often demonstrates the individual’s health and nutrition.  Proper health and nutrition stimulate the brain physiology reflecting cognitive skills.  According to UIS (2014), in 2013, there are “162 million malnourished children under 5 in the world” (p.48).
